The OATA, in partnership with the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSA) has created this page as a resource center for all high school coaches, administrators and parents of student athletes participating in high school athletics.  Materials will include strategies for the management of concussions, heat illness, etc.  It is the OATA's intent that this will assist in preventing unnecessary injuries and limit the severity of those that do occur.

Some points from the Law:

  • School Districts will work with the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association to develop guidelines and informational forms to educate coaches, youth athletes, and their parents of the nature and risk of concussion and head injury
  • Informed consent documents will be signed by parents and youth athletes acknowledging the risk of head injury prior to practice or competition
  • Youth athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury will be removed from play. “When in doubt, sit them out”
  • Youth athletes who have been removed from play must receive written clearance prior to returning to play from a licensed health care provider
  • It takes decisions out of coaches and parents hands and by doing so limits school liability. Again, “When in doubt, sit them out”
